SCOTT McMURDO

Influenced by many artists who mainly deal with the rendering of the human figure from old masters such as Rembrant, Goya and Vemeer to post modern artist such as Celia Paul, Alberto Giacometti and Frank Auerbach, Scott McMurdo works predominately with portraying the elderly, finding them evocative and imbued with imagination and memories that are etched on their skin. The lines, colour and tones of their skin have an ornamental quality that he feels is fascinating and revealing.

To conscientiously represent the human figure in an ever changing world of rapid and ephemeral culture is, he feels, as emotive a subject as it has ever been, and helps to highlight the power of the individual and the pensiveness of isolation and reflection.

Scott’s aim is to seek beyond the realms and constraints of a simple likeness of the subject and construct from the physiognomy of the face and body traces that symbolise and communicate feelings of emotion that the viewer of the work can empathise with.
