WALL PROJECTS II
The Old Rope Works
13 Bents Road
DD10 8QA

Saturday August 11th – September 1st 2018
Tuesday to Saturday 10 – 5pm

I am delighted to welcome back the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) to WALL PROJECTS II. The work of ten leading artists is celebrated here, all of whom have served as Presidents of the Society during the past thirty years.  The exhibition also includes interview transcripts and images of the artists' studios.  Together with the artworks, this offers a glimpse into the practices of these established contemporary artists who live and work in Scotland, England and the United States, and provides a fascinating insight into their experiences as SSA President at different times in the Society's development.

The exhibition also marks the launch of a new prize to be awarded at the prestigious SSA Annual Exhibition in The Real Scottish Academy, Edinburgh at the end of the year.

PREVIOUS EXHIBITIONS

A Kind of Blue - Kim Canale

15.07.18 / 4.08.18

This will be Kim’s second solo show at WALL PROJECTS.  ‘Regardless of what media I am using, my work always seems to have shades of melancholia running through it, recalling memories and sensations. Living by the sea has filtered unconsciously into my work, and I enjoy the challenge of not trying to represent how the sea looks, but more how it makes you feel’.

Musician and songwriter, Rhona Macfarlane will be playing in the Gallery from 2pm on Sunday 15th July, having played at Celtic Connections earlier this year.

Avant Garden - Group Show

21.10.18 / 18.11.18

WALL PROJECTS opens the art season, with AVANT GARDEN 12 Artists have been invited to submit works with their own response to their garden, focusing on Flowers and Botanics.

This will be WALL PROJECTS fifth show with Anna, who first exhibited in 2006 and is a firm favourite with owner Kim Canale and her clients.

This Exhibition is dedicated to my Cousin Tricia Winton’s son, David Wyllie, who died tragically this February. RIP.

JO GANTER: ABSTRACTIONS

28.02.15 / 21.03.15

Jo Ganter specialises in printmaking, and ever since leaving Edinburgh College of Art in the 80’s has remained committed to etching. She has always been fascinated by space – by the contrast between space which seems illimitable and space which has been contained. This is evident in her minimal, meditative series of beautiful and considered works.

‘Abstractions’ gives us a taste of Ganter’s creative output from 2000 to the present day.

Catherine Cameron is interested in the psychological issues that form and shape us as human beings.  Theories that have informed her motivation are those of Dr Berit As and the Five Master Suppression Techniques which were identified and listed during the 1970s.

She uses natural light and stages the work, aiming to go beyond the indexicality that analogue photography depends on, sometimes creating a new reality that never existed.

ARTSYLAND 8: NEW GRADUATE EXHIBITION

06.09.14 / 04.10.14

Having studied Design as an undergraduate and going on to do her MFA in Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art + Design, she has continued her own art practice, and has focused on Painting in  the past few years, but loves to work with a varied range of mediums, including Photography, Film, Text + Installations. She won the special prize by Richard Demarco in The Scottish National Art Competition in 2008 with her painting ‘Lunan to Lucca’.

STUART BUCHANAN: PAINTINGS FROM THE WATCHIE

17.05.14 / 28.06.14

Stuart’s paintings have real presence. His figures which are set in richly textured and ambiguous landscapes, demand the viewer to stop and look.

Buchanan graduated form Glasgow School of Art in 1992, and although a Glasgow boy, now lives with his wife and 2 girls in Catterline.

‘I like to think the viewer does not need to know where the figures are, nor what they are doing, to relate to the personal moments that I seek to capture in my work.’

DION SALVADOR LLOYD: THE SEA IS HERE IN ME

22.2.14 / 29.03.14

Working in oils, Lloyd creates abstractions of both mark making and texture that simply beckon you in, once there it is for you the viewer to find and decide on what is land, sea and sky. There is no truth of the image here, only a choice, on your part as to what it is you want to see within the space he has created’.

‘This is not the world we see, it is also the world we feel. Lloyd’s work makes this reality explicit in the most beautiful ways.’

EVA ULLRICH - NEW PAINTINGS

07.12.13 / 15.02.14

Eva Ullrich graduated with a first degree from Glasgow School of Art in 2011.  She then took part in the RSA Contemporaries Exhibition in Edinburgh and was a huge hit with the viewing public.

Ullrich's evocative paintings are of the landscapes which surround her, and like all good works of art she takes us on her own unique journey. Sensual in tone and feeling she sweeps the paint around the canvas, and into a semi abstract world, almost dream like.

Eva has been chosen to take part in 'Open Dialogue' as part of GENERATION 2014, at The Royal Scottish Academy. This exhibition has 17 new works on view.

Anna paints scenes from the edges of our habitation, the overlooked, peripheral places; wastelands, patches of scrub, lorry containers and abandoned buildings, that are more often viewed flashing past from the inside of a car.

This new Exhibition is a collection of new works, part urban part landscape but all with King’s distinctive cool palette of muted colours and considered mark and line making; this is a must see show.

Aesthetica is a series of small solo shows based on a selection of emerging Artists who have graduated and taken part in ARTSYLAND, which showcases new Graduates work each summer at WALL PROJECTS.

It is crucial for new Artists to have a platform to show their work and I take the task of encouraging and motivating them very seriously.

Aesthetica looks at how the Artist has moved on in their practice and is like a visual diary in the form of an Exhibition.

POETICS - STUART BUCHANAN SOLO EXHIBITION

09.03.13 / 20.04.13

This latest solo show, POETICS features Glasgow born artist, Stuart Buchanan, who now lives in Joan Eardley’s former home in Catterline.  His move to this area which has so inspired his work came about four years ago when he was appointed artist in residence with Aberdeen City Council. Summing up he says, “Previously my work was purely figurative, now the figures have shrunk and they are figures in a landscape.”

Inspired by his surroundings and notable artists such as Eardley as well as Annette Stephen and Lil Neilson, this new collection is varied and magical and this exhibition presents a rare opportunity for local art lovers.
