‘I
am interested in the loss of memory that occurs when the
image is separated from its original origins’
My current
work is concentrated around found imagery from the past, mainly
of family photographs such as holidays and weddings. I am
interested in the prominence that these objects hold beyond the
pictorial.
I find that
these types of pictures are so much more than just images,
foremost they act as a record of memory, a portal which sends us
to past times spent with loved ones, family and friends. They
allow us to remember people and places, events and emotions
While a
photograph is frozen in a millisecond of time, memory allows us
to see further, remembering times before and after the image was
taken.
But what
happens when these objects of memory are departed from their
original owners?
When a new pair of eyes views
the picture certain factors can be guessed, such as the dates or
places, or fictional stories can be created, but they will never
truly know of the event or the people that lie within.
The true identity of the
photograph will never be known.
